Who is required to complete hunter education in Montana?

Montana law requires that all individuals born after January 1, 1985, must complete a certified hunter education course to hunt in Montana.

Is completion of the Montana state agency-approved course required in order to buy a license?

In some cases, the answer is yes. In Montana, hunters who were born after January 1, 1985, must first complete a hunter education course in order to buy a license. This course must be approved by the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and IHEA-USA.

Reciprocity

The Montana Hunter Education Certificate is accepted by all U.S. states, provinces, and other countries with mandatory hunter education requirements. In return, Montana accepts Hunter Education certifications from other jurisdictions that meet official IHEA-USA requirements. This mutual acceptance is known as “reciprocity.”

Quizzes and/or Exams

Do I have to take an online exam?

If you are 18 years of age or older, the Online Qualifier Exam is the exam you take at the end of the online course. You must score at least 85% on the exam to pass. You have unlimited attempts to pass the exam. If you don’t complete the exam in one session, don’t worry. When you log in later, you will be taken to the first unanswered question of the exam.

If you are 11-17 years of age, you must complete this online course for admission to the Field Day. You are required to attend the Field Day to complete your hunting safety certification.
