Who is required to complete hunter education in Louisiana?

According to Louisiana law, all hunters who were born on or after September 1, 1969, must complete hunter education certification in order to hunt in Louisiana.

Is completion of the Louisiana state agency–approved course required to buy a license?

Yes, in many cases. In order to buy a license, Louisiana requires that hunters born on or after September 1, 1969, must first complete a course approved by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and IHEA-USA.

Reciprocity

All U.S. states, provinces, and other countries that have mandatory hunter education requirements will accept the Louisiana Hunter Education Certificate. Likewise, Louisiana will accept Hunter Education certifications that are issued by other jurisdictions that meet official IHEA-USA requirements. (This is known as “reciprocity.”)

Do I have to take an online exam?

The Louisiana Hunter Certification Exam is the exam you take at the end of the online course. You must score at least 75% on the exam to pass. You have unlimited attempts to pass the exam. If you don’t complete the exam in one session, don’t worry. When you log in later, you will be taken to the first unanswered question of the exam.

Once you pass and pay for the online course, you will be able to immediately print your proof of online completion and/or request that a PDF be emailed to you.

If you are under 16 years of age, you will need to bring this document with you to your Hunter Education Field Day.

What is the permanent Louisiana Hunter Education Certificate?

If you are 16 years or older, the Hunter Education Certificate is proof that you have successfully completed all the hunter education requirements and allows you to legally purchase a hunting license in Louisiana.

If you are under 16 years of age, you will receive the Hunter Education Certificate from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries after you successfully complete the Hunter Education Field Day.
