Signing Up for the Independent Study Field Day

Once you have successfully completed the online portion of the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks Hunting education course, you will need to locate and sign up for the required Independent Study Field Day.

You must bring your Independent Study Field Day Voucher to the Independent Study Field Day as proof of having completed the online course. You will not be able to complete the Independent Study Field Day without this proof.

Passing the online course does not guarantee you a spot at the Independent Study Field Day.

What to Expect at the Independent Study Field Day

This in-person Independent Study Field Day will be 4–6 hours, depending on the number of students attending. Activities include:

• a classroom session
• outdoor shooting
• blood trailing
• demonstrations of tree stand safety
• survival skills

At the Independent Study Field Day, South Dakota-specific regulations are covered in detail as well as issues that are not covered in this online course. Be sure to have proper clothing for the outdoor sessions.

After attending and passing the Independent Study Field Day portion of the Hunting education requirement, you will receive your HuntSAFE Certificate.
